Amazingly loud humpback whale song

Location: Cabo Pearce, Socorro Island, Revillagigedo Archipelago, Mexico.

Comments: Captain Dave reports that humpback whales were singing so loudly today that guests could hear the song inside the lower deck staterooms on the Nautilus Explorer!!! It was quite something for our guests while on their dive. In-water visibility was down on the east side of Socorro Island, with lots of phytoplankton in the water column. While this made it hard to spot big pelagic animals off the outer cleaning station at Cabo Pearce, the guests were rewarded with a great show of feeding behaviour by the giant manta rays. The mantas kept on coming up to the surface with their mouths wide open and cephalic fins fully extended and inverting onto their backs with their white bellies shining in the sunshine! A couple of divers did report seeing a total of 10 hammerhead sharks, as well as lots of smaller critters and a couple of octopus putting on quite a show.

Weather: Clear skies, sunny and beautiful, air temperature 79°F, winds from the north at 15 to 20 knots, seas 4 to 5 feet but calm in the anchorage.

Water: Water temperature 73°F. Visibility 30 feet in an uncharacteristic plankton bloom.
