Friendly giant manta ray interaction with divers

March 11, 2007 Written by

Location: Punta Tosca, Socorro Island, Islas Revillagigedos, Mexico.

Comments: Captain Dave reports that he decided to spend the last dive day of this trip at Punta Tosca on Socorro Island.   The original plan had been to spend the last day diving The Boiler and The Canyon dive sites at San Benedicto as that is where we typically get our best sightings and interaction with giant manta rays.  However, the guests on this trip decided that they really wanted to view the west side of Socorro Island and see some smaller reef life.  Flexibility is the name of the game on the Nautilus Explorer and so it was no problemo.  The west side of Socorro Island has beautiful rolling hills with low green vegetation that is gradually turning brown as the residual moisture from last summer’s hurricane season drys up. Divers lucked out with a large and very friendly giant manta ray that stuck with them with great interaction during one dive.  Humpback whales were all around and spend their day breaching, fluking and singing whale songs that could be heard underwater.  After dinner, on of the guests held a yoga class on the upperdeck under the starlight that finished up with everyone lying prone and staring up at the cloudless night sky.

Weather: Clear skies, light winds, low 4 foot seas but calm in the anchorage, air temperature 78°F.

Water: Water temperature 73°F, visibility 50 feet.
