Dolphins, Sharks, Mantas and That Was Just the First Dive

Location: Punta Tosca, Socorro, Revillagigedos, Mexico

Comments:  For Dive Day 3 we moved to Punta Tosca where guests were joined on their dive by a pod of dolphins who hovered beside them and rubbed themselves on the line and on the scuba divers. Just to enhance the experience there were two silky sharks circling the buoys and a manta came to see what all the fuss was about, producing some wonderful video footage and still shots.

On the trip out to the last dive guests were treated to the sight of a manta feeding on the surface at the dive site. We observed two separate incidents of interesting shark behaviour during the day. Firstly, as everyone was enjoying the interaction with the dolphins a tiger shark appeared and came between the divers and the dolphin. It was quickly diverted away from a diver by a group of 4 – 5 dolphins. Secondly, the silky sharks were not only present under the boat at night in the lights but also came to the back of the boat all day long whenever a skiff pulled up. This is different from our previous experience and reminiscent of when we first started to dive in the Revillagigedo Archipelago.  One thought is that someone may be discarding food waste overboard whilst anchored in the bay which is producing a pavlovian reaction to the presence of a boat by the sharks. After a delightful crab feast on the moon deck the crew beat the guests at Trivial Pursuit.
