Whale sharks being rubbed by Galapagos sharks as it cruises along. Captain's Log Socorro May 21, 2011

Galapagos Sharks rubbing against the Whale shark. Possibly trying to get help removing parasites?

Some days are always better than others.  I’ve been lucky to make a career working at sea and today was one of the days where kharma smiled at me.  We are at Roca Partida, a jewel in the Pacific.  Its no wonder why some crew members call it the ‘church’ as it is such a special place.  I was a little wary as the weather has not been following a regular pattern as it seems to have done recently.  But we saw a window of opportunity, and confident in crew and vessel we started our dive ops at 0745.

We arrived to find a lone humpback whale swimming by, showing us its tail as it dove deep.  One of my favorite sayings, and one I wish I followed more, is ‘Slow is smooth, smooth is fast’ and today was the perfect example of this.  Everyone was on their game as we loaded the inflatables with divers on the backdeck and headed for the dive spot.  Crew and passengers were like a well-oiled machine operating with precision.  And what did we get in return?  Sharks!!!!  Loads of sharks!  All sorts of sharks!  And to cap the triumph…a whale shark!  I am thrilled when the guests return talking about such a treat, but today was different – the whale shark was there for 2 whole dives!  Everyone saw it and the amazing videography of this beautiful creature is evidence.  Visibility was outstanding despite the sun hiding behind the clouds for most of the day.  It was almost enough to forget about the huge Galopogos sharks, the massive tuna schools and the giant hammerhead on the scene today.  It was an incredible afternoon for everyone has smiling face after smiling face returned with photos, video and memories stored away.  We have another day here at Roca, and I have my fingers crossed.
