Hollywood goes cage diving with the great white sharks in Mexico

June 6, 2017 Written by

Big mistake on my part. In my list of classic Hollywood shark movies I neglected to mention the new Hollywood movie “47 meters” scheduled for box office release later this month. The trailer is compelling (NOT) but is definitely entertaining for divers. Premise is that 2 women plummet to 47 meters on oxygen and are surrounded by fierce and psychotic great white sharks determined to tear the divers apart limb by limb. My calculations are that the partial pressure of breathing 100% oxygen at that depth would give a PPO2 of 5.7 (!!!) which would certainly guaranteed a CNS hit and death long before the sharks managed to tear apart the cage. It is a mistake to anthropomorphize animals but I actually think that it’s accurate attaching the label “psychotic” to the FX Hollywood creations in this movie. Putting aside my cynical comments, I recommend that all divers watch the trailer to better understand the harm Hollywood is doing with poor education, bad information and energizing all the wrong emotions regarding sharks. Sharks need our support and humanity and conservation. Not this kind of BS. I am motivated more than ever to increase awareness of the inhumanity of what is being done to sharks.

Safe diving.

Official synopsis:

Young sisters Kate and Lisa and travel to Mexico for a vacation filled with sun, fun and adventure. Lisa needs some extra persuasion when Kate suggests that they go diving in shark-infested waters. Safe in their protective cage, the thrill-seeking siblings come face to face with a group of majestic great whites. Their worst fears soon become a reality when the cage breaks away from their boat, sending them plummeting to the ocean floor with a dwindling supply of oxygen.
